Why concrete eggs?

The 2024 Durif marks a new chapter for Scion — our first wine matured in a handcrafted concrete egg imported from France, alongside Foudre and new French oak.

The concrete egg is an ancient shape reimagined for modern winemaking.

Handmade in France using natural clay-based cement, Loire sand and Burgundy gravel, the egg allows gentle oxygen exchange without imparting oak flavour.

Its ovoid shape, thick walls and natural thermal stability help build texture and integrate tannin more seamlessly, while preserving freshness, purity and site expression.

For Durif, we think it unlocks something special.

As vignerons, we put a lot of energy into growing exceptional fruit, and concrete helps us preserve that character in the glass.
