Durif Viognier 2015

Sale price$68.00

WINE CLUB EXCLUSIVE + MUSEUM RELEASE

A medium-bodied Durif inspired by Northern Rhone to hero detail, restraint and fine tannin. The co-fermentation of Durif with 3% Viognier delivers a floral lift and a more complex face to this traditional Rutherglen variety.

A savoury expression, for sure, but with ample fruit characters of red currants, juicy ripe blackberries and a hint of dry liquorice. Bottle age has also contributed to this wine's beautifully silky tannins. A gentle lover!

Halliday rating 96 pts:
"Winemaker Rowly Milhinch grows powerful durif but his grand goal is to give it an elegant turn. Here he hits pay dirt. This release boasts a churning complexity: deep, dark fruit, smoky peppery notes and firm but ultra-fine tannin. It will keep the faithful fans of Rutherglen Durif happy and also help win over a new audience; it takes muscular fruit and lands it softly on the palate. This is the wine Scion has been striving for."

Wine Front rates 95 pts:
"Intensity of flavour is almost a given when it comes to Rutherglen Durif but this adds polish and spice. In short, it has style. I’m tempted to call this elegant, because it’s certainly presented with restraint in mind, but there’s yet ample dark berried grunt and plenty of meaty, spicy, smoky character. I haven’t always loved the idea of Viognier being combined with Durif but there’s no question that it works exceptionally well here, not just in helping to lighten the load but in presenting a more complex face. The longer I looked at this wine the more impressed I was; I suspect it has a superb future ahead. The long strike tannin through the finish has been masterfully handled." (Campbell Mattinson)
